How to get to Andorra for skiing: plane, coach, train, car

Plane, coach, train or car: every way to get to Andorra for skiing, based on official sources, plus how to reach the slopes without lugging your skis.

How to get to Andorra for skiing: plane, coach, train, car

If you are working out how to get to Andorra for skiing, there are four main routes: fly into Barcelona-El Prat, Toulouse or Andorra–La Seu airport and continue by bus; take a direct coach from Barcelona or Toulouse; combine train and bus from France or Madrid; or drive in via La Seu d’Urgell and the CG-1 from Spain, or via the N-22 and Pas de la Casa from France. Whichever you choose, the last stretch is by road, and winter equipment is mandatory for cars from 1 November to 15 May.

The part most guides skip is how much easier the journey gets when you leave your skis at home. With a rental service that delivers gear to your accommodation, you can board the plane or the coach with a normal suitcase and, once there, reach the slopes by the Funicamp, the Canillo gondola or the local bus lines. This guide walks through every option using official sources.

  • Rent with delivery to your accommodation and you travel without a ski bag; the gear arrives the evening before your first day.

Your options at a glance

Andorra sits between Spain and France with no single gateway, so the best route depends on where you start and whether you want a car once you arrive. For travellers from the UK and Ireland, the usual choice is between flying into Barcelona or Toulouse. The 2026/27 season is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 at all three resorts, snow permitting, so book transport early for half-term and Christmas weeks.

These are the official distances to Grandvalira from the main arrival points, according to Grandvalira’s access page:

Starting point Distance to Grandvalira Main options
La Seu d’Urgell / Andorra–La Seu airport 27 km Free airport shuttle, car
Lleida-Alguaire 150 km Bus from Lleida, car
Carcassonne 176 km Car via the N-22
Toulouse 195 km Andbybus, Andbus, Flixbus, car, train + bus
Barcelona-El Prat 200 km Directbus, AndBus, ALSA, car
Reus 240 km Car
Girona 260 km Car (we have not verified a direct bus line)

If you are skiing Grandvalira, remember the area has several sectors: Encamp is the first access point from Spain and Pas de la Casa the first from France. Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís are reached through the La Massana and Ordino valleys.

By plane: Barcelona, Toulouse and Andorra–La Seu

Most people flying in land at Barcelona-El Prat or Toulouse and finish the trip by road. A third, much closer option is becoming more relevant: Andorra–La Seu airport.

Barcelona-El Prat

Barcelona has the widest choice of flights from the UK and Ireland and sits about 200 km from Grandvalira. Direct coaches to Andorra with Directbus and AndBus leave from the airport itself, so you do not need to go into the city centre.

Toulouse-Blagnac

Toulouse is about 195 km from Grandvalira. According to Toulouse airport’s website, Andbus and Flixbus run coach connections to Andorra, and Andbybus leaves from both the airport and Matabiau station. If you are staying in Pas de la Casa, coming in from the French side is the most direct route.

Andorra–La Seu airport

This is the closest airport: La Seu d’Urgell is 27 km from Grandvalira. A free shuttle runs from the airport into Andorra, taking around an hour, and must be booked on andbus.net. From 1 January 2027, Chalair has announced routes to Paris-Orly, Madrid and Palma, plus seasonal routes to Nantes, Nice and Lyon. As this comes from press reports, confirm dates and frequencies before booking.

Flying with a ski bag means paying for oversized luggage, waiting at the special baggage belt and wrestling it onto the coach. If you rent with delivery to your hotel, that whole step disappears.

By direct coach

The coach is the simplest way in if you would rather not drive mountain roads in winter. There are regular services from Barcelona, Toulouse and Lleida.

From Barcelona

The journey takes around 3 hours, depending on traffic, weather and your final stop in Andorra. Timetables and fares change through the season, so check them directly with each operator.

From Toulouse

Andbybus links Matabiau station and the airport with Andorra, and the airport also lists Andbus and Flixbus. The trip takes a few hours and is the natural choice if you fly into Toulouse.

From Lleida

There are buses from Lleida to Andorra, taking roughly an hour and a half according to unofficial sources. This is the key link if you arrive on the high-speed train from Madrid.

A practical tip: on the coach, a ski bag takes up hold space and is not always welcome at peak times. Travelling with standard luggage gives you more flexibility over departure times.

By train from France

Andorra has no railway station, but you can get fairly close by train from France. The two stations to know are L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre and La Tour de Carol, both with HIFE buses on to Andorra.

Heads up this winter: some routes are running on a provisional basis because the RN20 road is closed, so check the actual service, both train and bus link, before you set off. If you are staying on the French side of Grandvalira, this works well for a car-free stay in Pas de la Casa.

From Madrid and Lleida

There is no direct rail link between Madrid and Andorra. The most practical combination is the AVE high-speed train to Lleida and then a bus to Andorra with AndBus, ALSA or HIFE.

  1. High-speed train from Madrid to Lleida.
  2. Bus from Lleida to Andorra (roughly an hour and a half, according to unofficial sources).
  3. Local bus or taxi to your accommodation, or a bus line to the ski sector.

There is also a direct overnight bus from Madrid, taking about 7 hours according to unofficial sources. You arrive in the morning, although it is not the most restful option. Chalair has also announced flights between Madrid and Andorra–La Seu airport from January 2027; worth confirming nearer the date.

Whether by train or bus, hauling skis and boots through a connection is awkward. This is exactly where arriving with just a suitcase and finding your gear at the hotel makes the biggest difference.

By car: routes, Envalira and the tunnel

A car gives you the freedom to switch resorts every day, but it means preparing the vehicle properly and keeping an eye on road conditions. If you pick up a hire car in Barcelona or Toulouse, make sure it comes with the winter equipment described below.

From Spain

You enter via La Seu d’Urgell and the CG-1 road, which climbs towards Sant Julià de Lòria, Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. From there, Encamp and its Funicamp are about 10 minutes away by car.

From France

You arrive on the N-22 at Pas de la Casa. To carry on towards Grau Roig, Soldeu or Canillo you cross either the Port d’Envalira pass (2,408 m) or the tunnel, which is almost 3 km long. The 2026 tunnel toll is €8.10 for cars.

Entry Road First ski sector Good to know
Spain La Seu d’Urgell + CG-1 Encamp (Grandvalira) Passes through Andorra la Vella and Escaldes
France N-22 Pas de la Casa (Grandvalira) Port d’Envalira 2,408 m or toll tunnel
Inside: La Massana CG-4 / CG-5 Pal (CG-4), Arinsal (CG-5) Free parking at each sector
Inside: Ordino CG-3 Ordino Arcalís Car park for 1,500 cars; 14 km from Ordino

Parking matters too. Encamp has a free Park & Ride with the Funibus; El Tarter has a free car park with 850 spaces; Pal Arinsal offers free parking at each sector; and Ordino Arcalís has space for 1,500 cars.

Mandatory winter equipment

From 1 November to 15 May, winter equipment is compulsory in Andorra, according to the official winter mobility guide. You have two options:

Winter road phases

Before you leave and during your stay, check road conditions on mobilitat.ad or by phone on +376 1802 1802. Practise fitting chains before the trip: doing it for the first time on a snowy hard shoulder is no fun.

Getting to the slopes inside Andorra

Once you are in Andorra, you do not need a car to ski. Lifts that start in the villages and regular bus lines connect the main accommodation areas with the resorts. Bus timetables are on bus.ad.

Funicamp from Encamp

The Funicamp is a funitel lift of about 6 km running from Encamp up to Solanelles, inside Grandvalira. Encamp has a free Park & Ride served by the Funibus, and bus line L2 comes up from Andorra la Vella. It is the obvious way in if you are staying in Encamp, Andorra la Vella or Escaldes.

Canillo gondola

In Canillo the gondola leaves straight from the village, and lines L3 and L4 serve the area. Canillo is a sector geared to families and beginners, with the Mon(t) Magic kids’ circuit.

Ski Bus between Grandvalira sectors

Grandvalira runs a free Ski Bus between its sectors. It is handy if you are staying in Soldeu, El Tarter or Grau Roig and want to move around the area without a car.

To Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís

When choosing a base, the rule is simple: the closer you are to a lift that starts in the village, the less you depend on a car. If you are torn between resorts, our Grandvalira vs Pal Arinsal comparison sets out the strengths of each.

Travelling without carrying your skis

This is what changes the trip most. Taking skis, boots and poles on a plane means oversized baggage; on a coach, hold space; on a train, carrying everything through every connection. And once you arrive, you still have to get it from the hotel to the rental shop or the slopes.

With ski delivery in Andorra the approach is different: you travel with your suitcase and the gear comes to your accommodation. This is how Aconcagua Ski Delivery works:

For anyone arriving by coach or plane, that means getting in late, sleeping, and heading to the slopes first thing with gear already fitted. Read the full guide to ski rental with hotel delivery or book directly. The ACONCAGUA20 coupon (20% off) is typed in manually at the final cart.

Practical checklist before you go

  1. Documents: Andorra is outside the EU, so check the entry requirements for your nationality before you travel and carry your passport.
  2. Transport booked: coach, Andorra–La Seu shuttle (via andbus.net) or train + HIFE, checking for provisional routes due to the RN20 closure.
  3. Car ready: winter tyres with at least 3 mm of tread, or chains, from 1/11 to 15/05.
  4. Road status: mobilitat.ad or +376 1802 1802 before you leave.
  5. Phone: EU roaming rules do not apply in Andorra; check your mobile plan.
  6. Ski pass: buying online in advance can save up to 15% at Grandvalira.
  7. Gear: decide whether to bring or rent; see where to rent skis in Andorra and how to choose ski and boot sizes.
  8. Emergencies: 112 general and mountain rescue, 110 police, 116 medical emergencies, 118 fire brigade.
